Dès l’Antiquité, la Versoix a alimenté la ville romaine de Nyon en eau grâce à un aqueduc, puis elle a fourni toute la région par un réseau de canaux. Un château est attesté à Versoix dès 1026. Pierre II, comte de Savoie en 1263, dit le Petit Charlemagne, acheta Versoix à l’abbaye de St-Maurice en 1257 pour y fon- der une place forte, maillon dans la chaîne des villes neuves savoyardes autour du Léman et réplique à la fondation d’Hermance. Le noyau de Versoix conserve encore, entre le rivage et le bief des moulins, à l’entrée S de l’agglomération, son plan triangulaire, avec la route littorale bordée de maisons et les deux rues des Boucheries et des Moulins s’ouvrant à partir de la tête de pont sur la rivière. A la fin du XIV e s., Versoix formait un bourg portuaire et industriel prospère (tanneries, papeteries, polissage de pierres précieuses).
